Overnight Lane Closure on Rochester Bridge

There will be overnight single lane closures on Rochester Bridge on Tuesday, 30 July 2013, and on Saturday, 10 August 2013.

On Tuesday, 30 July, one lane of the Old Bridge, carrying traffic westward from Rochester to Strood, will be closed from 8:00 p.m. and reopened ahead of the Wednesday morning rush hour.

On 10 August, one lane of the New Bridge, carrying traffic eastward from Strood to Rochester, will be closed overnight.

Full traffic management schemes will be in place for both lane closures for routine maintenance of the bridge expansion joints and safety-related repairs of some minor carriageway defects.

Bridge engineers Hyder Consulting will oversee work being undertaken by The Rochester Bridge Trust.

Both bridges are owned and maintained by the Trust, which was founded in the late 14th century to provide a crossing over the River Medway at no cost to the public.

Today, the Trust receives no government or public funding. A registered charity, the Trust manages its original endowments of land and money to maintain the current two bridges and plan for future crossings.

Notes:

1. The Rochester Bridge Trust is a charitable trust that exists to maintain the old and new bridges at Rochester and serve the travelling public. It is the only surviving bridge trust still serving its original purpose, and it has served the people of Kent since 1399. The Trust also supports numerous community and education projects across historic Kent and Medway.

2. The Trust’s assets all derive from endowments of land and money in the 14th and 15th centuries and are carefully managed in order to provide an income to fund bridge maintenance and local charitable grants. The Trust receives no external funding and is regulated by the Charity Commission.
