The Telford Engineering Scholarship grants recipients £300 a year for two consecutive years, during their sixth form studies. The scholarship has been launched in recognition of the work of Thomas Telford, a former Bridge Engineer of Rochester Bridge between 1821 and 1827 and reflects the educational aims of the Trust to support civil engineering education.
The school attended by the successful applicant during the application process will also receive a one-off payment of £400 to be put towards STEM education.
The scholarship is available to students intending to study A-Levels in maths and physics and/or design & technology, and currently attend a non-fee-paying selective school. Students intending to study for the IB Diploma are also eligible, but must be taking a higher-level mathematics course.
The qualifying areas are: the historic county of Kent (Kent, Medway, Bexley and Bromley).
Eligible candidates are invited to apply, with an assessment made based on their application form and a recommendation from their science, technology, engineering or maths teacher at their current school. Potential students who wish to apply for the scholarship must submit one of the following; a one-minute supporting video or PowerPoint presentation explaining why you wish to study engineering and how you might use the scholarship, a poster or a relevant learning project.
For the duration of their two-year scholarship, the Trust provides financial and practical support for the scholars and also seeks to organise unique enrichment opportunities, thanks to its strong connections within the civil engineering industry. Scholars are invited to visit Rochester on a regular basis throughout the term of their scholarship, where they get the opportunity to meet current Court members and also take part in a Rochester Bridge tour.
Scholars are requested to produce an end of year blog for use on the Trust’s websites and social media channels. Scholars are asked to reflect on student life and their studies – a great way to inspire other young people to follow in their footsteps.
