One lane of the Rochester New Bridge carrying traffic eastwards from Strood to Rochester over the River Medway will be closed overnight on Friday and Saturday, July 19 and 20.
Full traffic management systems will be in place on both days from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. for essential cleaning and maintenance work to be carried out by the Rochester Bridge Trust.
The Bridge Engineer, Hyder Consulting, will oversee cleaning works to the drainage and joint systems and repairs to the parapets to help ensure continued safe use of the bridges for the travelling public.
Both the Old Bridge and the New Bridge are owned and maintained by the Rochester Bridge Trust. The Trust was founded in the late 14th century, to provide a crossing over the River Medway at no cost to the public.
Today, the Trust receives no government or public funding. A registered charity, the Trust manages its original endowments of land and money to maintain the current two bridges and plan for future crossings.

1. The Rochester Bridge Trust is a charitable trust that exists to maintain the old and new bridges at Rochester and serve the travelling public. It is the only surviving bridge trust still serving its original purpose, and it has served the people of Kent since 1399. The Trust also supports numerous community and education projects across historic Kent and Medway.
2. The Trust’s assets all derive from endowments of land and money in the 14th and 15th centuries and are carefully managed in order to provide an income to fund bridge maintenance and local charitable grants. The Trust receives no external funding and is regulated by the Charity Commission.
