In memory of Matthew Balfour

It was with sadness that the Rochester Bridge Trust has been notified of the death of Matthew Balfour.

A serving member of the Trust’s Court of Wardens and Assistants, Matthew was nominated to the post by Kent County Council in 2021.

Tim Cathcart, Chief Estates Officer at the Trust, said: “Matthew was a lively, engaging member of the board of trustees, bringing many years of lived experience to the role, he will be sorely missed. Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time”.

Matthew was a member of Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council for 24 years and of Kent County Council for eight years, serving as the Cabinet Member for Highways and the Environment and as a member of numerous committees.  He was a member of the management committee of both the Kent Downs and High Weald Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and was a member of the Kent Nature Partnership.

A retired Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, Matthew spent his working life dealing with a variety of areas of the property market including farms, estates and commercial property.

At the Rochester Bridge Trust Matthew was a member of the Education, Grants and Archives Committee. He was also a trustee of a number of other charitable trusts and a governor of a Special Needs School.
