Civil engineers who show an outstanding commitment to supporting younger colleagues can now be recognised with a national award and a cash prize.
Presented by the Rochester Bridge Trust in conjunction with the Worshipful Company of Engineers, the Phil Tindall Memorial Medal celebrates the efforts of those who have been particularly successful in mentoring new civil engineers. The award is now open for entries.
Launched in 2023, the award includes a bespoke medal and a £1,000 prize.
Sue Threader, Bridge Clerk (Chief Executive) of the Trust, said: “This award celebrates the legacy of Phil Tindall, who played an important role in the lives of many new engineers during his 40-year career – including many who worked for the Trust.
“In 2023 we were pleased to present the first award to Richard Brooks of Waterman Group. The judges were impressed by how passionate he is about the growth and success of his mentees, encouraging them to take ownership of their work.
“We are now looking for the next inspirational mentor, to win the 2025 medal.”
Entry for the award is free of charge via an online nomination form and can be made by anyone – including mentors and mentees. The judges are particularly looking for a commitment to mentoring those who are in the first ten years of their careers.
Richard Brooks added: “I was honoured to win this award, which recognises the importance of sharing knowledge and experience in a positive way. Helping early careers engineers to grow their confidence, skills and knowledge is vital for our industry and I consider it a privilege to help set their careers off on the right track.”
The Rochester Bridge Trust is a medieval charity responsible for providing crossings of the River Medway in Kent. In addition, it facilitates and provides engineering education for people of all ages, to support the bridge builders of the future. All its works are carried out at no cost to the public, the organisation is also on the journey to operating at net zero carbon.
The closing date for nominations is 24 March 2025. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview at the end of April, with the winners announced and presented with their prize at the Worshipful Company of Engineers’ annual awards dinner on 3 June 2025.
