The community is invited to step back in time to learn more about Rochester’s medieval bridge during a free Bridge Chapel Lecture.
The talk will introduce what was the main link between Rochester and Strood for more than 450 years, explaining where it was and demonstrating the changing shape of the riverside. It will be presented by Kate Castle, Bridge Programme Manager at the Rochester Bridge Trust.
Kate said: “Many people know there was once a stone medieval bridge at Rochester, but what they don’t know is that it was in a different place to the crossing we have today. It would also have been a very different shape: it was made of stone, comprised many arches and would have been much narrower.”
Using archival resources and civil engineering documents, the talk will follow the medieval bridge from the historic to the modern landscape.
The lecture will take place in the Bridge Chapel on Rochester Esplanade, on Thursday, 11 September. Doors open at 6pm for a 6.30pm prompt start.
Tickets are free but must be booked by emailing events@rbt.org.uk or online via Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-location-of-the-medieval-bridge-tickets-1336404845869
