Art has been used to document the world for many hundreds of years, and now the community can find out more about one stage of this history during the next in a series of free Bridge Chapel Lectures.
Between 1750 and 1900, the official way of creating a visual record was watercolour painting thanks to the ability to quickly capture landscapes, particularly in a military capacity.
This Bridge Chapel Lecture will be presented by Dr Fred Hohler, co-founder of The Watercolour World, a UK-based charity that is creating a free, online database of documentary watercolours.
Alison Cable, Archives Manager at the Rochester Bridge Trust which is hosting the lecture, said: “The Trust has a growing collection of paintings of Rochester Bridge and we are looking forward to hearing Dr Hohler talk about the evolution of watercolour painting. He will explore how watercolourists created a pre-photographic record of the world, and will use examples from the Trust’s collection, as well as from other collections.”
The lecture will take place in the Bridge Chapel on Rochester Esplanade, on Thursday, 25 September. Doors open at 6pm for a 6.30pm prompt start.
Tickets are free but must be booked by emailing events@rbt.org.uk or online via Eventbrite.
