Deaf-led British Sign Language (BSL) Tour

Join experienced deaf guide and historian, John Wilson, for a British Sign Language tour of a unique heritage site on the banks of the River Medway.

You will have the opportunity to explore a rare surviving medieval Bridge Chapel and Victorian Bridge Chamber followed by a behind-the-scenes hard hat tour of Rochester Bridge.

The tour is aimed at Deaf and Hard of Hearing visitors and will be delivered in British Sign Language.

Practical information

The full group will tour the Bridge Chapel and Chamber from approximately 11.30am to 12.30pm.

The group will then be divided into two. Half of the group will tour the bridge while the other half enjoy refreshments in the Chapel and Chamber, or the opportunity to explore Rochester High Street (self-guided).

When the first tour group returns at approximately 1.30pm, the other half of the group will be invited to tour the bridge.

Please wear sensible footwear and for safety reasons we ask that you wear trousers, shorts are not permitted.

Those attending the tour will be asked to sign a Safety Declaration and Photo Consent Form in advance of their visit.

Regrettably, children under the age of 8 are not able to join the bridge part of the tour.

Access information

There is a sesame lift and platform lift to enable access from the Bridge Chapel on the ground floor to the Bridge Chamber on the first floor. There are public toilets, including an accessible toilet located on the ground floor. There is plenty of seating in the building.

The Bridge Chapel and Chamber are situated a short walk along the Esplanade from Rochester High Street, and at the junction with Castle Hill. There is on-street parking just round the corner on Castle Hill and ticketed parking further along the Esplanade. Rochester train station is located 0.3 miles away and is easy to navigate either along the A2 or via Rochester High Street. There is step free access to all platforms at Rochester train station and accessible toilets. Many bus routes pass the Esplanade. The nearest bus stop is located opposite Castle Hill, a short walk from the entrance to the Bridge Chapel.
