Rochester’s Bridge Clerk becomes City Bridgemaster

Rochester Bridge Trust’s Chief Executive has become the latest incumbent to occupy a centuries-old role in the City of London.

Sue Threader has been elected one of two Bridgemasters of the City of London and, through this new role, will be supporting the City Bridge Foundation, the charity responsible for maintaining and supporting the five City of London bridges: Blackfriars, Millennium, Southwark, London and Tower.

The office dates from 1282 and holders are chosen for the year-long post via a vote of members of the City Livery Companies.

Sue said: “It is a huge honour to be appointed to such an historic position, and I am particularly proud to be the first woman in this role.

“During our year’s tenure, my fellow Bridgemaster and I will be acting as ambassadors for the City Bridge Foundation with the City Livery Companies, to increase understanding of the charity’s core activities and highlight its philanthropic work. Since 1995, the Foundation has granted more than three-quarters of a billion pounds to charities in Greater London.

“I am also keen to engage the wider public with the long and fascinating history of the City’s bridges and how they are managed.”

An engineer by profession, Sue is also a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Engineers and holds an Honorary Doctorate of Science at from the University of West London.
